To find and stay at a Shenandoah National Park it is not necessary to drive an hour to the top and then along Skyline Drive. The "next to the Park resort" in Syria, Virginia, is Graves Mountain Farm & Lodges and has Park access and its own mountains, trails, and many more activities than a resort up on Skyline Drive in the Park.

Dogwood is set in our tiny hamlet of Syria, on the "main street", with the river, our Doubletop Mountain and the Main Lodge & Restuarant are located just across the street and up the hill. Our 1100-acre Farm surrounds most of our hamlet.

The living-dining area is large - split in two by the central stairs going up to two of the three bedrooms. There is a brick fireplace at the west end.

The kitchen is good size and well equipped.

Bedroom 1 is on the ground floor with one king bed and bathroom
Bedrooms 2 and 3 are on the second floor, one with two queens and the other with one queen and one twin. There is a shared full bathroom upstairs.

Charcoal grill and fire circle are out back.

See Maps of Graves Mountain & Shenandoah National ParkThis is an 1890's large white farmhouse, set in a meadow verging the Rose River, a pristine mountain trout stream, with mountain forest around the meadow. The Kite family's graveyard from the 1800's is next to Poplar Lodge on the forest side.

Furnishings are period pieces with Clore furniture and "comfortable farmhouse". The interiors are all white, so light filters into all the rooms.

Kite House is large - sleeping 11 in 5 bedrooms. It has a full kitchen and lots of space to gather round the dining table.

Needing easier access?
There is one ground floor bedroom with 1 queen and adjacent bath. For guests needing easy access, this bedroom and ground floor can be accessed by a ramp to the back porch, to which you can drive.

The front of the farmhouse has a three-sided porch with rockers, looking out to Rose River.

Great for family reunions and large get-togethers.

Fishing folk have the stream 100 feet away -  a pristine cold-water mountain trout stream tumbling over river rocks. Fine fishing when working up the mountain.

Mountain lovers have the Blue Ridge Mountains wrapped in trees and shining with hidden discovery.

It is primitive - more like a big hunting-fishing dormitory for club members than a "cute" cabin in the woods. Goldilocks would have been bouncing hard all night with 14 beds to check out.

The golden part of the Upper Cabin experience is the isolation by the river, the invitation of the forest and rushing water to pause.

The cabin has a stone terrace with fire-pit to embrace its guests.
